Are you looking for professional headshots that truly capture the essence of your small business?
Recently, I had the pleasure of working with a husband-wife duo, the dynamic business partners behind their thriving auction company, JSL Auctions. Recognizing the need to update their professional imagery, they approached me for a custom headshot session.
We did more than just headshots—bringing in branding elements for their studio shoot to help them get more bang for their buck and use the images on their website and social media. This approach saves money compared to a full brand shoot, which often requires renting a location like an Airbnb or hotel for the right backdrop.
Typically, headshots are limited to the face and shoulders and are relatively simple to shoot. But for this session, I aimed to elevate their images by incorporating poses that included their hands, adding a touch of sophistication to the standard headshot.
The Importance of Preparation
My approach to photography is deeply rooted in preparation and customization. I bring years of experience from the advertising world, where I worked with major brands, and my investment in personal development has helped me refine my approach.
Before the camera comes out, I engage with my clients through a style and vision call.
This initial conversation helps me get to know clients on a deeper level, which is especially important for those who haven’t had a professional shoot since significant life events like weddings or milestone birthdays.
Clients who haven’t been photographed often feel nervous about stepping in front of the camera. This can even be true for seasoned clients who may still feel camera-shy—which is natural for anyone who isn’t used to regularly being in front of the lens.
As a coach, I recognize these feelings and tailor my approach to ensure clients feel comfortable and confident throughout the process.
During our Zoom consultation, I made recommendations for Shelley and John, including outfit suggestions and using a mood board. This consult is something I offer for custom or full brand shoots (but not mini headshot sessions).
All my clients also get access to a prep guide, which helps them get ready! On the call, we reviewed their vision and any special details they wanted.
Shelley and John’s audience includes schools, parents, and non-profits—groups that appreciate authenticity and approachability. We discussed ways to elevate their brand’s image to connect with these values. We chose a cost-effective custom headshot session instead of a more expensive location brand shoot. We decided on a dark backdrop with sparkly outfits to reflect the brand’s spirit.
The Shoot: Creating the Mood
For this session, I chose a more neutral backdrop for some photos, giving them a softer look. Another key aspect of the shoot was effectively posing the clients while ensuring the technical aspects of the photos were spot-on.
Beyond the Camera: Empowerment and Confidence
One of my primary goals is to empower women, particularly those who may feel camera-shy. I sincerely want my clients to fall in love with themselves when they look at their images and experience an internal shift in how they perceive themselves. Many, including long-term clients, have felt this empowerment and carried it into other aspects of their lives.
